Bottled water sales in Canada almost doubled between 2003 and 2008, growing from sales figures of $809 million in 2003 to $1.6 billion in 2008. This unprecedented growth was made possible through intense advertising campaigns that successfully transformed bottled water into a status symbol.

However, a lot of bottled water is simply filtered public drinking water, and high-end imported water has a high environmental impact due to extra transportation costs. Industrial bottled water is often no healthier than tap water and can cost up to 10,000 times more. At as much as $2.50 per liter ($10 per gallon), bottled water can cost more than gasoline. In production, it takes 3 liters of water to cool of the plastic of the bottle for 1 liter of bottled water.

It needs to be stressed that Quebec's public drinking water is on par (or even better) with bottled water, since it is required to abide to more stringent laws than bottled water.

The Quebec population needs to be more aware of the damage/cost of this industry. Simple alternatives are always available.

Enter 1Bottle Project, which aims to bring this issue to light and hopefully change water consumption habits in Montreal and, more particularly, Concordia University.
